Diamond Clarity Explained: What Do FL, VVS, VS, SI and I Mean?

When shopping for a diamond, you will often see clarity grades such as VVS1, VS2 or SI1 listed alongside the carat weight, color and cut. These abbreviations may seem technical, but they describe something fairly simple: the presence—and visibility—of a diamond’s natural characteristics.

Understanding clarity can help you choose a beautiful diamond without paying more for a difference you may never see. Here is what every shopper should know.

## What Is Diamond Clarity?

Diamond clarity measures the number, size, type, position and visibility of a diamond’s internal and external characteristics.

Internal characteristics are called inclusions. These may include tiny crystals, feathers, clouds or other features formed inside the diamond as it developed deep within the earth. External characteristics are known as blemishes and may include small scratches, polishing marks or extra facets on the surface.

Because natural diamonds form under tremendous heat and pressure, most contain some type of inclusion. Lab-grown diamonds can also have inclusions because of their growth process. In either case, these characteristics can help make each diamond unique.

Gemologists grade clarity under 10× magnification using an internationally recognized scale. A diamond’s grade does not simply depend on whether inclusions exist; it also depends on how easily they can be seen and whether they affect the diamond’s beauty, transparency or durability.

## The Diamond Clarity Scale

The clarity scale runs from Flawless, the highest clarity grade, to Included, where inclusions are more noticeable.

### FL — Flawless

An FL diamond has no inclusions or blemishes visible to a skilled grader under 10× magnification.

Flawless diamonds are exceptionally rare and usually command a significant premium. They appeal to collectors and buyers who value rarity, although they may not look noticeably different from a lower clarity diamond to the naked eye.

### IF — Internally Flawless

An IF diamond has no visible internal inclusions under 10× magnification, but it may have minor surface blemishes.

Like Flawless diamonds, Internally Flawless stones are rare. The difference between FL and IF is generally impossible to detect without professional equipment and expertise.

### VVS1 and VVS2 — Very, Very Slightly Included

VVS stands for Very, Very Slightly Included. These diamonds contain minute inclusions that are extremely difficult for a skilled grader to identify under 10× magnification.

- VVS1: Inclusions are especially difficult to locate and are typically less noticeable than those in VVS2 diamonds.
- VVS2: Inclusions remain extremely difficult to see but may be slightly easier to identify than in a VVS1 stone.

VVS diamonds offer exceptionally high clarity. To the unaided eye, they usually appear identical to FL and IF diamonds, making them attractive to buyers who want near-perfect clarity without paying the full Flawless premium.

### VS1 and VS2 — Very Slightly Included

VS stands for Very Slightly Included. These diamonds have minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easy for a trained grader to see under 10× magnification.

- VS1: Inclusions are minor and generally difficult to find.
- VS2: Inclusions may be somewhat easier to locate under magnification, but they are often invisible without it.

For many shoppers, the VS range provides an excellent balance of beauty, quality and value. A well-selected VS1 or VS2 diamond will typically appear completely clean to the naked eye.

### SI1 and SI2 — Slightly Included

SI stands for Slightly Included. Inclusions are noticeable to a grader under 10× magnification and, depending on their size and location, may sometimes be visible without magnification.

- SI1: Many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean, especially when the inclusions are small, light-colored or positioned near the edge.
- SI2: Inclusions are generally more noticeable and may be visible to the naked eye, although appearance varies considerably from one diamond to another.

SI diamonds can offer outstanding value, but they should be evaluated individually. Two diamonds with the same SI grade can look very different because the type and location of their inclusions matter as much as the grade itself.

### I1, I2 and I3 — Included

The Included category contains inclusions that are obvious under 10× magnification and may be visible to the naked eye.

- I1: Inclusions are noticeable and may affect appearance.
- I2: Inclusions are more prominent and may affect brilliance or durability.
- I3: Inclusions are very obvious and can significantly affect beauty, transparency or structural integrity.

Included diamonds may cost less, but careful inspection is important—particularly when an inclusion could weaken the stone.

## What Does “Eye-Clean” Mean?

An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions that are readily visible to the naked eye under normal viewing conditions. Eye-clean is not an official clarity grade, and its meaning can vary based on the viewer, lighting, distance and diamond size.

A VS2 or SI1 diamond may be eye-clean and look just as beautiful in jewelry as a much higher clarity stone. This is why the clarity grade alone never tells the full story.

## Does a Higher Clarity Grade Mean More Sparkle?

Not necessarily. A diamond’s sparkle is driven primarily by the quality of its cut, which determines how effectively the stone reflects and returns light.

Clarity can affect brilliance when inclusions are large, numerous or positioned where they interfere with light. However, once a diamond is eye-clean and its inclusions do not compromise transparency, moving to a higher clarity grade may increase rarity and price without creating a visible increase in sparkle.

## How Clarity Changes with Diamond Shape and Size

The best clarity grade can depend on the diamond itself.

- Larger diamonds may reveal inclusions more easily because there is more surface area to inspect.
- Step-cut shapes, such as emerald and Asscher cuts, have broad open facets that can make inclusions easier to see.
- Brilliant-cut shapes, including round, oval, cushion and pear, often hide minor inclusions more effectively because of their faceting and sparkle.
- Inclusion location matters. A small inclusion near the edge may be less noticeable and could potentially be covered by a prong, while a dark inclusion beneath the center table may be easier to see.

## What Clarity Grade Should You Choose?

There is no single best clarity grade for every diamond or every buyer. The smartest choice is usually the lowest grade that still appears clean to your eye and has no inclusions that threaten durability.

For many diamonds, VS1, VS2 and carefully selected SI1 grades offer an appealing combination of beauty and value. Buyers who prioritize rarity or symbolic perfection may prefer VVS, IF or FL. The right choice ultimately depends on the diamond’s shape, size, setting and your personal preferences.
